A lady rang up several months ago in a panic because her dog had gotten into her 2kg bag of Bokashi and eaten half of it. Would it hurt him? Was he going to be sick? What should she do?!!!
When Bokashi Man managed to stop laughing he was quick to reassure her that the worst thing that could happen to her dog was that his rear end might smell nicer. Bokashi ingested is like taking pro-biotics: the effective microbes are good little bacteria and they are totally organic.
So it got us to thinking: it’s completely organic, it’s non-harmful to people and animals, and of course it’s an odour controlling agent. So how about we try it on the outside of a smelly animal? (No, not my brother or my husband…)
So we experimented with various ratios of EM, and asked a few friends who have dogs to trial it for us…

This is Cooper, affectionately known to us as Boof-Brain, famous for his ability to levitate 2 metres vertically and land in the exact same spot. Spring-loaded legs, we reckon, but not the smartest pooch, and has the unfortunate tendency to exude a doggy aroma that lingers long after you’ve brushed off the copious amounts of Labrador hair.
Cooper’s owner, Tamara, volunteered to try our EM spray on Cooper (and possibly her husband…). She does a few quick sprays on him, and brushes it through his coat. Cooper doesn’t like to stay still long, so fortunately it’s a quick and easy process, and off he bounds.
A couple of colleagues of my mother also gave it a shot. They love it. One lady even went into a local pet “super-store” and raved to them about it, because there is nothing quite like it! It controls strong smells rather than masking them, so it won’t overpower a dog’s sensitive nose. It’s completely safe if they lick or ingest it accidently (we babysat Cooper once and discovered quickly he has a penchant for chewing things he shouldn’t).

We’ve been told it’s “great!” “easy!” “safe on the puppies.” A lady whose daughter breeds dogs uses it on the dogs and their bedding – a quick spray and rub through the coat every second day. Especially in the wet weather, it takes the edge off that “doggy” smell. I’m mailed some to my sister-in-law (big sook of a rottweiler) and my mother-in-law (lovely cattle dog – featured at top – and grubby, hairy Siberan Husky: hates baths but loves being rubbed or brushed so WOOF is perfect!)
So that’s the story of “WOOF – deodorant for Smelly Dogs” (get it? It’s like “JOOP – for Men” or similar).
So now just to see if it does work on sweaty, smelly men in a humid Queensland summer…

Last Saturday Bokashi Man and Bokashi Girl trekked up the coast to The Natural Foodstore at Forest Glen, where we took part in the promotional exhibition amongst various other local businesses. Organic fruit and vege farmers who supply the Natural Foodstore, organic butchers, organic honey (they even brought along the bees!) and assorted other stalls with interesting produce. Along with Reeco, they supply the Natural Foodstore with various natural and organic products.
Emphasis of the day was that Bokashi is easier than traditional composting, since it’ll take food waste like meat, fish, citrus, not to mention the tea bags and paper towel! A fair few eyebrows rose over than one, and “ohhh… hmm…” went some thoughtful voices.
Till next time Bokashi Fans!
